Final state of Jodocus Hondius' rare world map in twin hemispheres surrounded by a decorative strapwork border. This state was published by Le Clerc's widow.
Jodocus Hondius engraved two world maps for Le Clerc. This one, after Gerard Mercator, is based on Rumold Mercator's two hemispherical map of 1587 featuring a large Terra Australis Incognita. In the first state, this double hemisphere map is significant in its early portrayal of a string of Pacific Islands that span the ocean from the tip of South America, to just south of New Guinea and what would be very close to the north coast of Queensland, Australia. Its importance lies in the fact that this is the first obtainable (and only the second) world map to show this island chain, which is in stark contrast to all other contemporary world maps. Some of the Terra Australis coastline directly below New Guinea has also been erased. At the top of the map in the corners are two circles containing the names of winds in both Dutch and Italian. At the bottom are circles containing information of the earth's climatic zones and the names of phases of the moon.
This information is adopted from the Printed World catalogue series, one of the most enjoyable and informative Australian Antique map catalogues available, created and compiled by Simon Dewez.
