This interesting map by Aaron Arrowsmith highlights the fact that in 1802 there was little accurate knowledge of the coastlines of the southern portion of the Australian continent. It does however show the new discoveries by Bass and Flinders in the north of Van Diemans land (Tasmania), which would have been very new knowledge at the time.
This striking map is of a very high quality as were the maps completed by Aaron Arrowsmith. Around the continent cross hatching gives the oceans a shaded effect giving the map a strong appearance and blurring the lines between what was known and unknown in the south.
