Australia is shown with north oriented to the left .
The prototype of De Wit and Ottens' impressive map is Goos' 1666 map of the East Indies which also had Australia shown with north orientated to the left which was used by other mapmakers of the time. The first map of the East Indies to use such an orientation was Van Loon's 1661 chart. In earlier editions of the map there has been a failure to address Tasman's first voyage discoveries in Tasmania however in this edition the omissions are redressed and Tasmania is charted.
As with most post-Tasman maps, De Wit's map records most of the early Dutch discoveries in Australia including de Witt's (1628), Houtman's (1619), Hartog's (1616), the Leeuwin's in 1622, Nuyts' (1627) and Carstensz's discoveries on Cape York Peninsula in 1623.
First published in 'Orbis Maritimus ofte Zee-Atlas' Amsterdam 1675. This edition by Louis Renard in 'Atlas de la Navigation et du Commerce, Paris 1715.
