Sectional map of the north coast of Queensland showing the Endeavour River, where Cook repaired his boat after being shipwrecked.

Cook's bark, the 'Endeavour' encountered little trouble as she sailed north after leaving Botany Bay, however on 11 June 1770, she struck a reef off what is now called 'Endeavour' River in northern Queensland. This chart of part of the east coast shows the region where Cook's ship was wrecked and subsequently repaired in the mouth of the Endeavour River. With the 'Endeavour' once more seaworthy, Cook climbed to the top of Lizard Island, and from that advantage point was able to see a safe passage through the reefs. With due consideration for the future safety of the 'Endeavour' and her crew, he sailed through the gap and further out beyond the reef. As a result, a large section of the coast was neither sighted nor charted by Cook - quite clearly shown here on the map. It was not until Matthew Flinders circumnavigated Australia, that the charting of this section of the coast was completed.
