1778 - Mappe Monde ou Carte Generale de l’Univers

Map makerSizeMap IDCondition
Tobias Lotter 900 x 465 mmD1 / M234 / I151Good condition. Margins moderate

Lotter's map of the world in ovaloid projection shows the track of Cook's first voyage. The later editions of the map continued to update the map especially using Cook's discoveries.

Even though Cook had published the discoveries of his second voyage the year earlier in 1777 those discoveries are not noted on the map. Obvious geogrphical differences compared to later editions of the map are the lack of knowledge about the west coast of North America and the absence of Hawaii. Cook is referred to in the title as Lieutenant though by 1778 he had been promoted to Captain. Although the track of Cook's first voyage is shown, few details of his discoveries in New Zealand or on Australia's east coast are shown. Neither Botany Bay or the Endeavour River are marked, although Torres Strait is labelled 'D. d'Endeavour'.

This information is adapted from the Printed World catalogue series, one of the most enjoyable and informative Australian Antique map catalogues available, created and compiled by Simon Dewez.
