Another very important chart in terms of the English settlement of Australia. This chart was completed by John Hunter shortly after establishing the settlement in Sydney cove in 1788. The First Fleet chart details the depths of Port Jackson and shows that Sydney cove was deeper than most other coves, which was one of the reasons this area was favoured for settlement over many others.
The chart displays some settlement buildings in Sydney cove, although the settlement at the time consisted mostly of tents. The chart was included in a 'Voyage of Arthur Phillip to Botany Bay…', in which Phillip outlined the extent and accounts of the new settlement in Australia. John Hunter, who made the chart, would eventually become the second Governor of the settlement in 1794.
