A small chart of the southern hemisphere that shows the track of HMS Sirius on her voyage out from England in 1787 as the flagship to the First Fleet. The First Fleet was made up of eleven ships that would establish a new colony in Australia in 1788. The Sirius captained by John Hunter was to remain with the settlement and act as a transport, supply, and defensive ship. This would not last long however and in 1790 HMS Sirius hit the reef on Norfolk Island and sank. This was a tremendous blow to the new colonies on Norfolk Island and at Sydney Cove. To make matters worse not only had the colonies lost a ship but Norfolk Island would have to feed the many new mouths from the shipwreck until they could be picked up. So was the lack of food that within one season the Providence Petral, a large sea bird was completely wiped out on the Island.
