Major Thomas Livingstone Mitchell was a man that was both successful with his exploration and surveying and also criticised for some of his methods. He was the Surveyor General after Oxley and was responsible for opening up much of Eastern Australia's interior including central Queensland and Australia Felix (Victoria).
Mitchell embarked on four major expeditions into the interior with this book representing the findings from his third, which began in 1835. He followed the Lachlan, Murrumbidgee and Darling Rivers to where they joined the Murray River and discovered much new grazing land over the mountains in present day Victoria. His earlier two expeditions had often ended because of violent clashes with aboriginal people in the region however during his third expedition most of the aboriginal people he encountered were friendly to the expedition.
Here supplied is the first of the two volumes of Mitchell’s third expedition. It has been rebound in cloth and is an adequate reference piece for those with an interest in early Australian and Victorian history. Priced accordingly. Please contact us for a full condition report.
