Streit’s map of Australia and the Pacific is executed with an excellent quality of engraving. Streit most likely takes inspiration from Swoboda and Hartls map of ‘Australien’ of 1805, as much of the artistic content is similar though Streit’s map has been updated with the newest discoveries including Flinders and not Baudin’s voyage names. The map’s cartouche is an excellent example of penmanship of the early 1800s that is interestingly placed in the blank curved area created between the longitude and latitude.

There are two inset maps showing both Sydney and New South Wales. The inset map of New South Wales is taken from Flinders map of the region of 1814 going as far west as the Nepean river and encompassing information on the settlement in and around Sydney and Parramatta with short descriptions of the land. The inset map of Sydney comes from Lesueurs map of the colony that featured in Freycinet’s atlas of 1811/1812. The map focuses on the region of Sydney Cove (Darling harbour/ George Street, Circular Quay) and the quality of the engraving is also very good. Though there are no descriptions of the lands use in Sydney it does attempt to illustrate it through the varied hatching.

A beautiful and well engraved map of the region of Australasia.
